Taking a dive

Oscar Smith is a member of the NYPD’s elite Dive Unit, the Department’s search and rescue team for any emergency that happens on the water. My friend and writing colleague Marci Alboher profiled him about a year ago in her series about people who are taking creative approaches to their careers.

On January 15th, Smith was off duty and working with private clients at the gym he owns in Tribeca. Suddenly, he got a phone call summoning him to the scene of the US Airways Flight 1549 crash in the Hudson River. He quickly traded his workout gear for his scuba gear.
